10,000 Steps a Day?
I keep reading about how walking is a great way to stay in shape. The goal put out there by the experts is 10,000 steps per day.

Unlike some running partners, dogs won’t sleep in on you or complain about the weather. Photograph by Flickr user TheGiantVermin.
I like to think I’m fairly active and that I walk that much already. But I bought a pedometer and started keeping track of how many steps a day I walk. I was surprised to find that the most I walk is 6,000 steps a day if I’m having a really busy day at the hospital. I’ve been trying to take my dog pack on longer walks in the afternoon or evening to try to reach the elusive (for me) goal of 10,000 steps a day. I haven’t made it yet, but I’ve gotten close, 9600! My dogs are certainly a lot happier and we are all getting fit together.
As pet owners we have an advantage when it comes to reaching New Year’s goals to get healthier and fitter. We get a lot of positive reinforcement from our dogs when we take them out…those happy tail wags are proof. Plus, our dogs are VERY good at reminding us that its TIME FOR A WALK!
I’ll see you out on the trails!
